Traineeships

SSDS offers a range of traineeships in locations throughout all of Australia.

Traineeships can vary in their duration but usually run for a period of twelve month to two years.

You can complete a traineeship in the area of:

  • Hospitality
  • Cleaning Operations
  • Transport
  • Warehousing and Storage
  • Horticulture
  • Business Administration
  • Clothing Production

All our trainees are direct employees of SSDS, which means when you finish your training you do not need to re-apply for your position.

When you start as an employee with SSDS you complete on the job training as well as gaining the following Nationally Accredited Certifications:

Certificate III in Hospitality

Our most popular traineeship will see you gain a position working in a fast paced Mess – either in front of house of back of house duties, working at corporate functions and serving Australian Defence Personnel. Trainees will gain hands-on skills in food and beverage service, restaurant service, processing financial transactions and communication techniques.

Certificate III in Hospitality Commercial Cookery

This traineeship will prepare you for the fast paced environment of the commercial catering kitchen. You will learn valuable food preparation and presentation skills, as well as the relevant food safety and food hygiene practices.  This qualification will equip you with the necessecary skills to be able to cater for groups of all sizes and to operate efficiently and effectively in the commercial catering environment.

Certificate III in Asset Maintenance (Cleaning Operations)

Trainees will gain skills in contract cleaning in an industrial, commercial and domestic environment using the appropriate chemicals and cleaning techniques, incorporating the management and leading of small teams.  Training may include the control and supply of equipment and material to ensure efficient workflow, organise and monitor work to maximise resource effectiveness and carry out high level cleaning.

Certificate III in Transport & Distribution (Warehousing and Storage)

This traineeship is applicable for a role in either our National Clothing Stores Contract or our Garrison support stores position. Areas that are covered could include general warehouse duties such as housekeeping, receipting, stock maintenance, stock replenishment, forklift operations, order picking, packaging, stocktaking and reconciliation and order checking and dispatch.  It also involves known routines, methods and procedures where some discretion and judgment is required in the selection of equipment, services or contingency measures.

Certificate II and III in Horticulture (Parks & Gardens)

Grounds staff benefit from training in all facets of grounds maintenance and cover weed management, turf care, propagation support, provision of planted area care, such as maintaining plants in healthy condition, recognising different plants, planting and pruning trees, shrubs, treating weeds, pests and diseases, maintaining irrigation and looking after grassed areas as well as general grounds duties and team work.

Certificate III in Business Administration

Most often completed for administration roles located at our site offices, this traineeship will provide opportunities to obtain skills in the preparation and process of business information such as mail, word processed documents, compiling spreadsheets, customer service and workplace safety and procedures.

Certificate III in Clothing Production

Our newest traineeship, designed especially for those working in our National Clothing Stores contract, this traineeship will have you learning how to use machinery, complete garment alteration and construction, pattern cutting, design, sewing, grading and managing workplace information.

All the training is paid for by SSDS, provided to you in your rostered work hours and you are paid as per normal – no trainee wage!

SSDS also runs regular internal programs to support learning in the workplace. We hold regular workshops and team talks and have regular opportunities to attend internal training for both operational and personal development. This includes comprehensive leadership training for all supervisors and leading hands.
